INTRODUCTION
The philosophy of UGT Valmadrera has always been to enhance and promote the activities, places, and traditions of our local area.
To pursue this mission, it is essential that the common good is respected,
maintained, and valued by everyone.
THE PROJECT
Spit Jam è un progetto di rigenerazione urbana, arte pubblica and sostenibilità ambientale, promosso dall’associazione APS UGT Valmadrera, insieme a Walnuts Factory, Ophelia Digital, Avis Valmadrera e il Comune di Valmadrera.
Nasce con l’obiettivo di trasformare la città in una galleria d’arte a cielo aperto, dove muri e spazi urbani non sono più superfici anonime, ma diventano opere vive che parlano, ispirano e purificano l’ambiente.
Grazie all’uso di tecnologie innovative come una vernice fotocatalitica, Spit Jam crea veri e propri polmoni urbani, superfici artistiche capaci di ridurre gli inquinanti atmosferici e migliorare concretamente la qualità dell’aria.
È un progetto che intreccia arte, musica, sport e sostenibilità per generare bellezza, aggregazione sociale e un nuovo senso di appartenenza alla città.
Che cos’è spit jam
Spit Jam è un evento che intreccia diverse forme di espressione urbana:
Arte Urbana (Street Art e Writing)
• Live painting eseguito da artisti selezionati tramite bando pubblico.
• Tema dell’edizione 2025: “Organismi Murali – la città che respira, parla e cresce attraverso i suoi muri.”
• I muri diventano superfici narrative capaci di raccontare storie, identità e visioni contemporanee.
Sostenibilità Ambientale
• Tutte le opere saranno trattate con Airlite, la vernice fotocatalitica trasparente che trasforma le superfici in polmoni urbani, capaci di abbattere fino all’88% degli inquinanti atmosferici.

THE PROJECT
Spit Jam was born from a commitment to the community, an initiative designed to raise awareness among citizens and institutions about active citizenship and the care of public spaces.
The project, promoted by UGT Valmadrera in collaboration with Walnuts Factory, the Municipality of Valmadrera, and Avis Valmadrera, aims to redevelop the aesthetic appearance of the town's market square. This location, strategically and centrally located, serves as a focal point for the community, frequented not only for commercial activities but also as a space for social gathering.
Alongside urban redevelopment, the project seeks to foster local artistic creativity, offering an opportunity for people of all ages to express themselves through a specific art competition. This initiative aims to both actively involve the community in a rewarding activity and to enrich and enhance the city's urban landscape.
IMPLEMENTATION
An open call will be launched for local artists and creatives, who will be invited to submit mural proposals that are in harmony with the local cultural identity and traditions.
A qualified jury, composed of representatives from UGT Valmadrera, Walnuts Factory, the Municipality of Valmadrera, and Avis Valmadrera, will be tasked with selecting the best works, which will then be created on the external surfaces of the square.
Two phases, a single vision: transforming the urban space into a living organism.
Spit Jam is an artistic and cultural project divided into two distinct but closely connected moments, created to give the city a voice and let it breathe through public art.
The first phase takes shape through an open call, an art competition for artists and writers invited to redevelop the outer walls of the public restrooms in Valmadrera's market square. This is one of the town's most frequented spots, especially during the Valmadrera Vintage Market. It is an opportunity to restore aesthetic, symbolic, and social value to currently marginal surfaces, transforming them into visual portals that speak to everyone.
A qualified jury, composed of representatives from UGT Valmadrera, Walnuts Factory, the Municipality of Valmadrera, and Avis Valmadrera, will be tasked with selecting the best works, which will then be created on the external surfaces of the square.
The second phase will culminate on Sunday, August 31, 2025, with a major public event where the selected artists will create their works live. The day will be a celebration of community and urban culture. The live painting will be accompanied by:
• DJ SETSand musical selections
• Live rap performances
• Hip Hop and Break dancers
• Free skater and ramp demonstrations
• A creative market featuring art, handmade goods, vinyl records, and urban design
• Socio-cultural spaces designed for dialogue and inclusion, dedicated to young people and families
Spit Jam aims to be a cultural seeda starting point for a broader urban circuit
where art not only beautifies but also stimulates, connects and transforms.
It is a long-term vision that imagines Valmadrera as an open-air gallery,
balanced between nature and city, industry and vision, lake and concrete.
PROJECT THEME
"Mural Organisms"
The city that breathes, speaks, and grows through its walls.
Throughout history, walls have spoken. They have protected, divided, told stories, and borne witness.
They have been surfaces of passage, silent manifestos, spaces of freedom. Before printed paper, radio waves, or digital stories, walls were the first collective medium.
Today, in Valmadrera, those walls come alive again.
They are not mere walls, but urban organisms: sensitive surfaces capable of breathing and communicating, of welcoming visions that weave into the contemporary landscape.
"Mural Organisms" is the theme guiding this edition of the project. It is an invitation to conceive each wall as a living body that pulses with the city: a collective skin that expresses itself through images, words, symbols, colors, and gestures. Each work is a permanent trace that conveys meaning, emotion, and identity—a piece capable of dialoguing with those who live here, pass through, or simply observe.
The theme is free in form but alive in meaning: artists are invited to interpret the organic and changing nature of the territory, its balance between industry and landscape, lake and mountain, history and possibility.
The old spinning mills, the strength of steel, the fluidity of water, the roots of the earth: these are not narrative constraints, but poetic suggestions. The starting point can also be elsewhere—in a memory, a feeling, a message to be shared—like a gift to the city, an intimate offering that becomes public.
Valmadrera is currently in a moment of openness, between transformation and identity. It is a place that welcomes visitors, events, and markets that bring new energy—like the Vintage Market, which enlivens the square every month with visitors from across the province and beyond. In this dynamic scenario, the project becomes a living part of the change: the walls do not just define boundaries; they open up. They become visual portals, windows onto possible worlds, surfaces that breathe and tell their own stories and the stories of those who look at them.
Through different colors, words, lines, shapes, and styles, each piece will become part of a large artistic ecosystem. A widespread urban lungthat expands and regenerates, making the city more human, more welcoming, more alive.
POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY
The aesthetic redevelopment of the market square is a strategic choice aimed at making a central space for city events more welcoming and functional. Rather than simply turning it into an attraction, the goal is to improve the overall quality of the environment, increasing its use during events like the Valmadrera Vintage Market and other cultural and commercial gatherings.
A more curated, colorful, and visually appealing environment will help increase visitor numbers, generating positive economic and social benefits for the entire community. The increased flow of people to the market square will have a driving effect on surrounding businesses, fostering the development of local commerce and stimulating further opportunities for economic and cultural growth for all of Valmadrera.
A MURAL THAT BREATHES: ART AND SUSTAINABILITY WITH AIRLITE
One of the most innovative aspects of the project is the use of Airlite, a special eco-friendly paint that turns any surface into a natural air filter. Through an electrochemical process activated by light, Airlite reduces air pollution, eliminating up to 88% of harmful agents such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), bacteria, mold, and bad odors.
In addition to purifying the air, Airlite also combats the formation of fine dust and has an antibacterial and anti-smog effect, contributing concretely to the improvement of environmental quality.
The redevelopment of Valmadrera's market square will thus also become the first urban project in the city —and likely in the entire province— to introduce a permanent "urban lung." A tangible step towards sustainability, combining beauty, participation, and positive environmental impact.

Furthermore, this project represents the first step toward a bigger dream: to create, over time, an urban circuit of murals that can transform Valmadrera into a true open-air art gallery.
For this first event, the walls involved are located in the heart of the market square, home to the Valmadrera Vintage Market on the fourth and fifth Sundayof each month. This established event attracts visitors from all over the province and neighboring areas, bringing new vitality to the town and the lake basin.
The hope is that SPIT JAM will become the first in a series of recurring events, capable of weaving together art, culture, sustainability, and tourism, strengthening Valmadrera's identity as a reference point for urban art and social innovation in the region..
